Founded in 1854, the Village of Rantoul is the third largest municipality in Champaign County , with 13,674 people. As the former home of the Chanute Air Force base, Rantoul is one of the major economic redevelopment success stories to come out of the wholesale military base closures in the 1980s.

Higher Education

Parkland College

Parkland College is primarily a two-year college offering vocational and transfer degrees in over 100 different areas. Parkland also offers advanced degrees through partnerships with Eastern Illinois University, University of Illinois at Springfield, Franklin University, Olivet-Nazarene University, and Greenville College. Parkland also offers nine sports teams and numerous student organizations.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the preeminent research universities in the world. Eleven alumni of UIUC, including nine university faculty, have been named Nobel Prize Laureates, and 18 alumni and two faculty members are Pulitzer Prize recipients. UIUC campus is also home to the largest public university library in the world, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the renowned Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and 19 Division I sports teams.


Rantoul is located at the juncture of I-57 which runs north-south and state route 136 EW.

Rantoul has a family aquatics center, fitness center, maplewood sports complex, skate park and other sporting complexes. The Champaign County Forest Preserve boasts more than 3,500 scenic acres throughout the county. Activities include fishing, boating,  hiking, picnicking, cross-country skiing, sledding, golfing, and swimming.
